Productivity Management

With labor costs accounting for at least 50% of hospitals’ operating budgets, we work with clients to determine ways to optimize staffing, labor expense management and productivity. Our customized Productivity Assessments provide the benchmarks, measurement tools and staffing plans necessary to drive change and propel your organization forward.

When conducting an Assessment, we review:

  • Organizational structure, span of control, management responsibilities
  • Staffing levels and mix by cost center
  • Workload units by cost center (e.g., patient days, billable tests, procedures)
  • Staffing costs by cost center
  • Contract labor costs (e.g., agency, travelers or other services) by cost center
  • Overtime utilization, premium pay and other factors affecting labor costs
  • Productive and non-productive time
  • Recruitment and retention

The deliverables include a written plan that details our findings, recommendations by cost center and a productivity model with targets and/or staffing plans by department or cost center.
